Review: Thirteen Senses - The Bound and the Infinite (2024)

After a ten-year hiatus, Thirteen Senses return with an atmospheric and elevated album.

THIRTEEN SENSES - THE BOUND AND THE INFINITE (2024)

After a decade-long hiatus, and untouched by the pressures of a modern music industry often tainted by trends and superficiality, the British band Thirteen Senses have returned with a new album that resonates deeply with both long-time fans and newcomers alike. Released on August 9, 2024, The Bound and the Infinite shows the band's artistic integrity and commitment to creating music that is true to their core.

The album opens with the ten-minute epic "Life and Deathless," a track that immediately sets the tone for the journey ahead. It's a deep, atmospheric, and elevated piece that captures the essence of Thirteen Senses at their best. The expansive soundscapes are, at the same time, haunting and uplifting, with layers of melody that transport the listener to a place of introspection and wonder through the edges of the bound and the infinite, spiritually speaking. The band's maturity shines through in every note, and the willingness to experiment with new sonic elements only adds to the track's power.

Following this monumental opener, "Duad," "Whirled," and "The Wild" continue to highlight the band's evolution. There’s a blend of ethereal tones and driving rhythms, with unexpected yet welcome twists. With its cinematic quality and a touch that brings warmth and vitality to the tracks, these three tracks, together with the opening song, form the heart of the album, each one a standout in its own right; collectively, they create an experience that is nothing short of transcendent.

"Let’s pretend we’re still young, maybe we’ll desire different," the protagonist narrates on a vibration of bliss in the duality of existence; on higher platforms of evolution, the question comes: "What have I found?" It feels rhetorical, as the journey is already fulfilled with the realization of an elevated thought: "A world in ever lighter bounds... feels heaven miles down here," concludes.

What makes The Bound and the Infinite truly special is the sense of freedom that permeates every song. Thirteen Senses have managed to avoid the traps of an industry that often pushes artists to conform; instead, they stayed true to their feelings and beliefs, culminating in an album that is a reflection of their journey — a transition from the past to the present where they've realized the value of being themselves without compromising their integrity. In a world where many fall miserably to darker forces and propaganda, Thirteen Senses stand as a force of authenticity.

It's worth noting that their previous album, A Strange Encounter (2014), had the air of a farewell, a bittersweet conclusion to a story that many thought had ended. But The Bound and the Infinite is a beautiful gift to those who have waited, reminding us that the best things come when you least expect them. The album's creation, developed in seclusion and privacy, has resulted in a pure expression of the band's desires, free from external influence and driven by a genuine love for their passion of creating music.

The Bound and the Infinite is an unexpected welcome return from Thirteen Senses. It’s an album that stands on its own merits with the exploration of sound and emotion that captures the essence of what makes music so powerful. The band's refusal to compromise, their dedication to their art, and their ability to create something so profoundly moving is deserving of high praise.
