Intro

A new kind of mandala is taking shape

The Bits of Infinity is an ongoing experiment in transforming mandalas into pixels and a bit-inspired aesthetic. While the visual language is completely different from Renzy Star’s usual digital artwork, the fundamental structure remains the same: each piece is built around a 12-sided mandala, preserving the symmetry and geometry that define this form.

The result is a different way of constructing and experiencing a mandala: simpler in its visual elements, but still connected to the infinite possibilities within its geometry.

The Bits of Infinity - Pixel Mandalas is a work in progress experiment with no predetermined ending. It began with eight pieces, but its final form remains unknown.

It’ll be discovered along the way.

Story Mode

A contemplative order of six digital monks from the Kansai region of Japan once claimed that enlightenment was impossible in high definition. Too much detail, they believed, distracted the mind from what truly mattered. By deliberately lowering the resolution of their sacred creations, they discovered that when every circle, line, and petal was reduced to discrete glowing squares, the mind could no longer simply wander across the surface. It had to reconstruct the whole, square by square. This act of reconstruction became their meditation; eventually, their new form of contemplation.

The monks created an original set of eight mandalas using only the visual language of early home computers. They taught their students to contemplate them until the squares stopped looking like squares and began to resemble portals. Over the years, however, the students lost interest, and the teachings were gradually forgotten. All but one moved on. Take had never truly wanted to become a monk. He was a traveler at heart, yet found himself years later trapped in a melancholic corporate life in Tokyo, exhausted by the noise and pace of the modern world.

One day, while playing an old arcade game in solitude, Take remembered the pixel mandalas. He returned to Kansai to find the monks, or whoever might still be there. The original disks had been lost, but the images survived as what the monks called boot-sector relics: tiny, radiant, stubbornly low-resolution fragments of their forgotten practice. With their blessing, Take remained with them for a season. Through meditation, he gradually found a peace he had forgotten was possible, and began seeing both himself and the world from a different perspective.

When he was ready, Take left to travel across Japan and eventually beyond it, determined to preserve the monks' teachings and honor what he had failed to understand when he was younger. He carried the original eight mandalas with him, but the journey would not end there. During moments of solitude, meditation, and encounters with new places and people, Take began creating new mandalas of his own, following the same sacred 12-sided structure he had learned from the monks. Every creation was first sent back to Kansai. With the monks' blessing, it became part of the growing archive.

As Take traveled, others began discovering the same connection he had found: a quiet path toward inner peace, healing, contemplation, and a different way of seeing. Each new encounter could inspire another creation, and each new creation could become another portal for someone else.

From eight to infinity, this is the journey of The Bits of Infinity.
