![]() Why Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts are turning people into Zombies. And how to break free from the Zombification. WHY REELS AND SHORTS ARE RUINING YOUR MIND
Not so long ago, social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube had distinct identities. Instagram, for example, was a place for sharing moments through photos, creating personal galleries of life’s highlights. YouTube, on the other hand, was where you’d go to watch videos — whether you were looking for tutorials, entertainment, or just some laughs. These platforms had purpose, each unique in its own way. But then, something happened — the unnecessary rise of Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. These features were introduced to replicate TikTok’s success, but unfortunately they’ve done more harm than good, creating an era of mindless scrolling, where users are trapped in an endless loop of short, often meaningless content. It’s as if we’ve collectively turned into zombies with our thumbs moving almost involuntarily and our brains disengaged from anything of real substance. TikTokTrap TikTok’s appeal was its quick, bite-sized videos, designed to capture your attention for just long enough before moving on to the next. But what was once a fresh move has now become a sketch for other platforms. Instagram and YouTube, in their rush to compete, adopted this model, and in doing so, they lost what made them special.
The zombification effect of these features is real. Users spend hours scrolling through videos that offer little or no real value at all, absorbing nothing meaningful. The dopamine hit from watching short, flashy content is addictive, but it’s also shallow. This kind of content is designed for instant gratification, not for learning, growth, or deep engagement. The more we engage with this kind of content, the more our brains adapt to it, and the harder it is to focus on anything longer or more complex. A Society of Scrollers We’re creating a generation of people who struggle to concentrate on anything substantial, who find it difficult to engage with content that requires thought or effort. This zombification doesn’t just affect how we use social media; the implications of this shift are profound and goes deeply into other areas of life. The ability to learn, to absorb information, and to think critically is being compromised. When everything is reduced to a 15-second clip, the richness of real life — its complexities, its nuances — is lost. This trend is affecting the identity of the platforms we once loved or liked. Instagram’s charm as a photo-sharing app has been overshadowed by the chase for virality through Reels. YouTube, once a place for creators who took the time to craft meaningful videos, now pushes Shorts to the forefront, prioritizing quantity over quality. The originality of these platforms has been diluted, replaced by a format that is forgettable and devoid of substance. Reclaiming Our Lives How do we escape this cycle of endless scrolling and start living more meaningful lives? The solution lies in taking a step back from social media and reconnecting with the real world. Start by setting boundaries. Limit your time on platforms that prioritize short-form content. Be intentional about what you consume — seek out content that adds value to your life, whether it’s educational, inspirational, or just something that makes you think. Engage with longer forms of content, like books, documentaries, or even longer YouTube videos that go deeper into a subject. Most importantly, don’t forget to live your life outside of the internet. Go for a walk, have a conversation with a family member, pick up a hobby that doesn’t involve a screen. Real life is happening all around you, and it’s infinitely more rewarding than anything you’ll find in a 15-second video.
Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts may have been the worst additions to social media in recent years. They’ve led us down a path of superficiality and distraction, erasing the original identities of the platforms they invaded. But we have the power to change course. If you choose to engage with content that matters and live your life fully and intentionally, you can naturally break free from the zombification and find meaning in the real world once again. |
