“Influencers” have become a predominant presence on social media platforms. They often accumulate large followings and significant influence. But are they really worth following? Here are some reasons why it might be time to forget about “influencers” for good.

1. Unrealistic Standards: Let’s face it, the images and lifestyles portrayed by “influencers” are often far from reality. Behind the filters and staged photoshoots, there’s a team of professionals working to create the illusion of perfection. By constantly bombarding ourselves with these unrealistic standards, we can end up feeling inadequate and not satisfied with our own lives.

2. Promotion Over Authenticity: Many “influencers” prioritize sponsored content and brand partnerships over authenticity. Their feeds are filled with advertisements disguised as genuine recommendations, making it hard to distinguish between what’s real and what’s paid for. This constant bombardment of promotional material can be overwhelming and ruin the trust between “influencers” and their followers.

3. Negative Influence: Despite their title, “influencers” are not positive role models. Some promote harmful behaviors, such as extreme dieting, materialism, or risky stunts, in order to gain attention and followers. Others lie to achieve enough views and impressions. By continuing to support these “influencers”, we are contributing to the normalization of these behaviors and ideals.

4. Comparison Culture: Following “influencers” can fuel the comparison culture that permeates social media. As we scroll through their feeds, we may find ourselves feeling distant from the reality as we keep seeing their lives and possessions. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and a constant desire to keep up with the unrealistic standards set by the so-called “influencers”.

5. Loss of Authentic Connection: In the pursuit of likes, followers, and impressions, many “influencers” sacrifice genuine connection with their audience. Instead of having meaningful relationships, they focus on growing their follower count and engagement metrics. As a result, interactions become superficial, without any true connection.

So, what can you do instead of following “influencers”?

1. Preserve Your Feed: Take control of your social media experience by curating your feed to include content that really inspires you. Follow accounts that promote what you feel connected with. Don’t give credit to unrealistic standards and harmful behaviors.

2. Seek Genuine Connections: Instead of following “influencers”, seek out genuine connections with real friends, family, and communities that share your interests and values. Engage in meaningful conversations, support one another, and cultivate relationships that bring joy to your life.

3. Focus on Self-Improvement: Instead of comparing yourself to “influencers”, focus on your own personal growth and self-improvement. Set meaningful goals, pursue your passions, and celebrate your achievements, day by day, no matter how small. Remember that true happiness comes from within, not from external validation or material possessions.

While “influencers” may have their place online, it’s important to question the value they truly bring to our lives. By prioritizing authenticity, connection, and self-improvement, we can free ourselves from the negative influence of “influencers” and create a more fulfilling and meaningful online experience.

So why are you still following “influencers”?

It might be time to forget about them for good and focus on what truly matters.

Note: Apologies for the use of quotation marks around the term “influencer” throughout the article. This was done to reflect my personal stance on what I consider one of the worst terms since the advent of social media.
